Our founding mineralMagnesium Bentonite Clay

Magnesium Bentonite Clay

Clay / mineral
DetoxifyRemineralizeClarify

The mineral we were built on in 2008, and the subject of the book Healing Clays. Its story runs from the riverbanks of the Amazon to the healers of the ancient world.

What the animals knew first

Long before clay reached a jar, it was medicine in the wild. As Healing Clays puts it, "many animal species, including man, practice geophagy, or the eating of earth." In the Peruvian Amazon, macaws gather at riverbank clay to "take distinct advantage of the ability of bentonite to adsorb the toxins they consume when eating poisonous fruits," and they even feed clay to their chicks in the nest.

They are far from alone. Gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans purposefully seek out clay rich in minerals like iron and smectite. Elephants mine it with their tusks, and grazing animals from cattle to deer, horses, and camels do the same. More than fifty species have been studied: some are after the sodium, others use the earth to steady a sick stomach or, like the llamas of Peru, for a kind of natural detox.

Prized for thousands of years

People noticed the same power early, with records reaching back to Mesopotamia more than 2,500 years ago. On the Greek island of Lemnos, healers pressed clay into small tablets, each one "stamped with the seal terra sigillata meaning 'sealed earth,'" then traded them far and wide for wounds, poison, and ailments of every kind. Healing Clays traces these prized "earths" clear across the ancient world, from Egypt to Armenia to Greece.

The rumored beauty of Cleopatra may be less to do with the legend of her bathing in the milk of an ass, but more to do with the fact that she insisted on using clay from the river Nile on a regular basis when performing her cosmetic rituals.
From the book Healing Clays
