Caffeine
Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine)

Caffeine is a plant compound that visibly de-puffs and energizes tired skin, especially around the eyes. Brightening and toning, it suits puffy or fatigued skin.
A natural history
Caffeine is a natural compound the plant world makes for itself, found in the coffee bean, the tea leaf, the cacao pod, and the guarana seed. Its most famous origin story belongs to coffee: the legend of Kaldi, an Ethiopian goatherd who, the tale goes, noticed his goats grew frisky after nibbling certain red berries. It is a charming story and almost certainly a later invention, but the real milestone came in 1819, when the German chemist Friedlieb Runge first isolated pure caffeine, reportedly after the poet Goethe handed him a box of coffee beans to study.
From beverage to beauty, caffeine found a second life on the skin. It is a staple of eye creams and energizing serums, valued for the look of firmer, fresher, less-puffy skin. Scientists even rely on it as a yardstick: caffeine slips through skin so dependably that labs use it as the standard compound for testing how well ingredients penetrate.
What it does for your skin
Caffeine brings two things to skin. A review of its cosmetic use notes that it penetrates the skin barrier readily, is a useful antioxidant, and is linked with increased microcirculation, the rationale behind its de-puffing reputation.[1] In a clinical evaluation, a caffeine-based topical was associated with a visible reduction in body-contour measurements, supporting the look of smoother, firmer skin, though the researchers were careful to note the mechanism is not fully proven.[2] We use it mainly for that fresh, awake look.
