A natural history

Benzoin is a fragrant resin tapped from the bark of Styrax trees in the misty forests of Southeast Asia, treasured for centuries for its sweet, warm, vanilla like balsamic scent. Carried along the old trade routes, it became one of the great incense resins of the East, and its very name records that journey, coming by way of an Arabic phrase meaning the incense of Java.

Beyond the censer, benzoin found a gentle place in skin care. It is the heart of the classic apothecary preparation known as friar's balsam, a soothing, protective tincture painted on the skin for generations. Perfumers prize it too, as a fixative whose warm balsam helps a fragrance linger softly on the skin.

What it does for your skin

Benzoin is a warm, soothing balsamic resin. Phytochemical study confirms it is rich in benzoic acid, coniferyl benzoate, and sweet vanillin, the aromatic compounds behind its comforting scent.[1] Research on the benzoin producing Styrax trees documented antioxidant, free radical scavenging activity.[2] In a formula, benzoin lends a soothing, comforting, lightly defending touch and a beautiful warm scent to dry or stressed looking skin. Its evidence is largely compositional, and it can be a sensitizer for some, so it is used with care.
