What on Earth???
The Origins, Types, and General Uses of Clay
For centuries, bentonite clay has been used for health and beauty benefits. Bentonite clay contains minerals used for healing, detoxification and other therapeutic purposes. The benefits of bentonite clay are tremendous. It helps rid the body of toxins, chemicals, parasites, metals, viruses and anything with a positive ionic charge in the body by absorbing and removing these toxins from the body while replenishing the system with minerals such as silicon, magnesium, sulfur, etc. The primary practices for the use of bentonite clay are: of drinking as a liquid; applying as a clay mask/poultice; or using as a bath or foot soak.
Not all clays are created equally. Clay was formed millions of years ago from volcanic ash. When a volcano explodes, lava form seven separate and distinct family groups. Within these seven families there are thousands of different types of mineral compositions. These different compositions form different types of clays. The most prevalent types of clays are:
Kaolin Clay: Known for their uses in anti-diarrheal products, such as Kaopectate. Kaolin clay acts primarily as a bulking agent and some health food companies sell it as a mineral supplement.
Illite Clay: Known for many commercial applications. Illite clay It is a green mineral clay found in marine settings. Some cosmeceutical companies use this industrial clay in their mud formulations
Chlorite Clay: Known for their abrasive and cleansing properties. Never use this caustic, abrasive clay on your body.
Vermiculite Clay: Used in pottery and other applications, such as porcelain finishes on metals.
Smectite Clay: Used mainly for health and dietary purposes as well as for many industrial applications. This clay has the unique ability to adsorb and absorb toxins at a greater rate than any other type of clay. Within the Smectite family there are hundreds of different types of clays, each one consistsed of many minerals. Montmorillonite clay used in industry and in many food stores. <not sure that what means .. used in industry and food stores? A subcategory of Montmorillonite clay is Bentonite Clay, a swelling clay, with healing attributes. There are different types of bentonite clay; each one is named after the respective dominant element, such as potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium or aluminum.
Magnesium Bentonite Clay is a rare clay, a true miracle, containing many minerals used for healing, detoxification and other therapeutic purposes. By adding Magnesium Bentonite Clay to your life, you are adding one of the most important parts of Nature’s Pharmacy.

Be Free of Synthetic Chemicals: Synthetic Chemicals vs. Natural Chemicals

Be Free of Synthetic Chemicals:
Synthetic Chemicals vs. Natural Chemicals
Although science would debate that the compounds we expose our skin to are, whether they are natural or synthetic, all considered to be chemicals, there can be no doubt that we are now daily exposing our skin to a strange cocktail of synthetic chemicals. Science usually proves such compounds to be within safe guidelines regarding toxicity, but there can be little doubt that not only do we not understand what the long-term effects may be, but we also do not understand how one synthetic chemical interacts with another.
So what is the problem here? Nature doesn’t make synthetic chemicals, so when we were created, our bodies didn’t receive any coding on how to handle synthetic chemicals. This doesn’t mean the skin won’t absorb them. It does absorb synthetics which is one reason why there is a limit placed on how much of a synthetic chemical can be used in a product. However, after absorption, the body doesn’t know what to do with a synthetic chemical. It’s confused. Does it expel the chemical or store it in the fat? Our bodies can’t handle synthetic chemicals as it was not made to handle them. The body was given no instructions for this type of chemical.
What can we find in our beauty and cosmetic products which our bodies have to deal with that they wouldn’t, in a pre-industrialized world, be exposed to? Some of the synthetic chemicals used in skin care and cosmetics are commonly found throughout all products. These usually include preservatives such as parabens and fragrance chemicals like tolulene (1). Parabens are now understood to mimic the hormone estrogen and are suspected of negatively influencing the endocrine system which involves, among other things, thyroid function. Yet chemicals in the paraben family are used in the majority of products and can be in everything from shampoo to hand lotion and moisturizers. Just imagine the effect of slathering and lathering the body with these synthetic chemicals day after day, year after year. The daily amounts must add up to pounds and pounds of chemicals over the years being absorbed into the body. And remember, the body doesn’t really know what do to with these type of chemicals.
What’s in all those suds?
A chemical commonly found in cleansers such as soap and body washes are the sulfates which provide us with bubbles and lather. These are derived from SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) or SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate). One thing that even scientists cannot defend is that these sulfates actually break down the protective layer of the skin allowing for increased permeability which, among other things, leaves us more prone to infectious bacteria and toxins.
Does that smell good?
There can be no doubt that it’s great to smell good, but all the fragrances we use, either as direct perfumes or those which are included in hair and body products are most often chemically synthesized. This means that we are often covering ourselves in phthalates. These are the same chemicals which are used in plastics and as binding agents in industry. At the end of 2014 a report was published (2) which finally confirmed that our wide exposure to this particular group of chemicals was indeed a major health concern and links phthalate to diseases such as type II diabetes, autism spectrum disorders and many other common illnesses.
Foundation..off to a bad start.
One aspect of the morning beauty and hygiene regimen which belongs almost exclusively in the domain of the ladies is that of cosmetics. The most commonly used cosmetics, although applied almost without thinking include liquid foundation creams. These products include a variety of compounds to make them liquid, flexible, give coverage and staying power which means a broad range of ingredients are needed. Sulfosuccinate which is a common ingredient in foundation creams are known to irritate not only the skin but also the eyes and most foundations also contain the old favorite, parabens and when it comes to this particular ingredient it seems there is no area of the skin that we do not expose to this endocrine damaging chemical to.
Go Natural!
It is often pointed out to us that in the modern world it is truly impossible to avoid exposure to synthetic chemicals. However, in many situations, such as that of personal care, we do have the choice to limit that exposure. There is the opportunity to change our habits and introduce healthier options not only for our skin but ultimately the entire body.
The Mississippi Miracle Clay® products’ formulating criteria is based on the old southern and simple philosophy that if it can’t be eaten or licked we don’t use it in our products. So you can be sure that you’re getting pure and natural ingredients when using our products. Our Mineralized Body Oil is a great way to switch over to a purely natural way to moisturize the skin and the Mineral Castile Soap is excellent for cleansing the skin without chemicals. There are so many wonderful options available that avoid exposing the skin to synthetics. The noticeable benefit is over time, using Mississippi Miracle Clay® natural products, the skin becomes healthier and healthier – nourished. When using synthetic products, the skin become becomes confused and depleted. Those synthetic products will only appear to benefit the skin for a brief while. To start making the change to natural today, check out our products at www.MississippiMiracleClay.com.

Clay in Myth and Legend
Although most people today are unaware the significant role which clay has played in the lives of humans can be of no doubt. Men and women, from the earliest records, have utilized many types of clay not only to benefit health but also lifestyles. We have used it for building and cooking, for drilling and damming. It has provided protection against bad health and restorative properties when we are ill. Modern men and women, in many ways, owe their very lifestyles and existence to clay.
The factual evidence relating to health and beauty benefits does exist, even though in modern times it has been relegated by many to the realms of 'anecdotal.' this is despite the fact that in contemporary times many people acknowledge the improvements made to skin and modern health spas and mud baths being considered a normal, if somewhat luxurious beauty treatment. Yet the importance and relevance our ancestors attributed to clay can be seen no more clearly than in the myths and legends which evolved over the centuries as a result.
Today in our 'modern' world we have forgotten how much our ancestors, and even many 21st century cultures, appreciated and revered clay. It is not to our benefit, but to our detriment, that we shun the properties of clay without making it our business to examine the benefits further.
It is no secret that such was the influence of clay throughout history it was believed that man evolved from it and many religions today have their foundation and beginnings in some way attributed to clay. The Bible is one of the main proponents of clay and it features throughout quite regularly. Even in Genesis there is the inference that man was formed from earth - and, as we all know, will return to it:
'Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.' Genesis 2:7.
But the Bible is little different to many other religions which at some point have made reference to the origin of man as arising out of clay. And, even more recently, science has actually provided some theoretical evidence that the creation of man from clay is actually a scientific possibility.
In 2013 it was reported by researchers at the Kavli Institute at Cornel for Nanoscale Science that they had been looking into hydrogels which could form proteins on a huge scale. What they discovered, was that the inorganic molecules required could be provided in clay and ultimately result in the hydrogel they were seeking. (Ref: Life might have Evolved in Clay)
Dan Luo of the Kavli Institute explained in a news release, 'We propose that in early geological history clay hydrogel provided a confinement function for biomolecules and biochemical reactions.'
The science behind the findings is outside of the knowledge of the layperson, however it appears that the sponge-like property of clay, which we are all so familiar with, has, under certain conditions, the ability to transform into exactly the type of hydrogel Luo and his team were looking for. The hydrogel, is formed from clay which comes into contact with water which then allows it to hold on to the chemicals it has trapped. Then, over many millions of years, this results in the formation of biochemicals including proteins and DNA - most particularly in the large quantities which the research team were originally looking for.
The fact that man, or all life on earth, may have originated from clay, is it would seem, a real possibility because when volcanic clay is combined with water, the compounds it holds eventually form proteins and, ultimately DNA. (Ref: Cornell Univ. Clay May Have Been Birthplace of Life).
The concept of course is quite difficult to prove in practice - not many scientists are going to be around for a few million years - yet here again there is a strong suggestion that our ancestors were right.
Although prior to this very recent research we may have scoffed at the idea of our ancestors believing life evolved from clay scientists are proving that their beliefs have substance. All life, it seems, could very well have evolved from clay and the myths and legends that we know today may someday turn out not to be myths but natural history.
